The United States Men’s National Team has secured a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup following a 2-0 win against Australia in Seattle on Friday afternoon. This victory marks their second win in as many games during this World Cup. It’s noteworthy as it’s the first time since the inaugural World Cup in 1930 that the United States has triumphed in consecutive World Cup matches.
In the team’s second World Cup match, a familiar scenario unfolded. Flo Balogun initiated a play that resulted in an own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess in the 10th minute. This early lead in the group stage match was the first instance in World Cup history where a team benefited from own goals in two consecutive games.
Despite numerous chances, the Stars and Stripes did not register a shot on goal for approximately 43 minutes. However, they extended their lead when Alex Freeman scored a goal just before the 44th minute. The initial offside ruling was overturned by a VAR check. Freeman, at 21 years old, became the youngest player on the roster to score in a World Cup.
Throughout the match, the U.S. maintained possession for over 60% of the time. Historically, the United States holds an 11-2-1 record when scoring first in the World Cup.
The match also noted the absence of Christian Pulisic due to a calf injury, yet the U.S. team maintained their performance level without him. Alex Freeman’s goal was a significant highlight, solidifying their standing at the top of Group D with six points. Australia remains in second place with three points, while Paraguay and Turkey, both winless, compete in a game that could influence the United States’ final group standings.
If Paraguay either wins or ties with Turkey, the U.S. could clinch victory in Group D. Regardless, even a Turkey loss doesn’t significantly alter the United States’ standing, enabling them to potentially rest key players like Pulisic for future matches. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the best eight third-placed teams, progress to the next stage. The U.S. team prepares for their next match against Turkey in Los Angeles next Thursday.
