USC Linebacker Suspended After Controversial Hit on Oregon Quarterback

Oregon quarterback Dante Moore suffered a late hit during a run play against USC on Saturday at the Coliseum. This incident led to Moore being taken off the field. USC linebacker Desman Stephens II delivered the hit and later received a one-game suspension with an official apology issued.

During the play, Stephens charged at Moore, who attempted to slide. Despite Moore’s efforts, Stephens collided with his head. This action sparked outrage among Oregon players and fans, further fueled by Stephens celebrating and smiling on the sidelines while Moore received medical care.

Moore had to be carried to a hospital, while Stephens was ejected for targeting. New NCAA rules allowed Stephens to stay on the sidelines during the second half to encourage his team.

Oregon’s coach, Dan Lanning, expressed disapproval of the hit, describing it as “disgusting.” Both Lanning and USC’s coach, Lincoln Riley, claimed they had not witnessed Stephens’ reaction afterward.

“Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” Riley stated. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions and will learn from this. The entire Trojan Family wishes Dante a full recovery.”

The USC’s release also contained an apology from Stephens:

“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game. Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable.”

“I take full responsibility for my actions. That is not the person or teammate I want to be, and I will learn from this.”

“I am deeply sorry to Dante, his family and everyone who saw my reaction.”

Oregon has yet to update Moore’s condition officially, but reports from CBS Sports indicated Moore suffered a concussion. On3.com reported Moore was cleared to travel back to Eugene with the team.
