The USC Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following his dangerous late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. This incident occurred during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-20 victory over the Trojans.
Moore was in the process of sliding after gaining sufficient yardage for a first down when Stephens targeted his head. As a result, Stephens was ejected for targeting, and Moore required medical attention on the field.
Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions and will learn from this.
USC released a statement on Sunday regarding Stephens’ actions and subsequent suspension. They expressed wishes for Moore’s full recovery, extending best regards to him and his family.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning expressed his disapproval, labeling the hit as “disgusting.” The incident drew immediate attention with Stephens briefly celebrating before Moore’s condition was realized.
Stephens issued an apology, stating, “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game.” He acknowledged his reaction was “completely inappropriate and inexcusable.” He expressed his hope for Moore’s recovery.
As a consequence, Stephens will miss the upcoming game against Washington. Oregon wide receiver Evan Stewart tended to Moore as he was taken off the field.
