For the past 15 years, the U.S.-Israel Education Association (USIEA) has provided American lawmakers with direct insight into one of the United States’ key alliances. Since its inception in 2011, USIEA has been instrumental in educating members of Congress on the complexities of U.S.-Israel relations, focusing on security, technology, and geopolitical issues.
Heather Johnston, the founder and president of USIEA, recently marked the organization’s 15th anniversary. In a discussion with Fox News Digital, she recounted a pivotal meeting with then-Majority Leader Eric Cantor, where she introduced plans to facilitate educational trips to Israel. Cantor had been searching for a leader to conduct these tours, and Johnston’s proposal filled that gap.
“He was flabbergasted because he had been looking for somebody for two years that could lead those tours,” Johnston remarked.
The organization’s inaugural tour featured five members of the House Armed Services Committee. Participants witnessed the state-of-the-art Iron Dome defense system, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declassified for their visit. This exposure impressed the lawmakers, prompting them to advocate for increased funding. Their efforts led to a budget tripling for the Iron Dome within months, demonstrating the impact of firsthand experiences on policy decisions.
Former President Barack Obama emphasized the unwavering U.S. commitment to Israel’s security, reflecting the continued support fostered by initiatives like USIEA’s.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Johnston and USIEA for their role in fortifying the U.S.-Israel alliance. He noted their contributions to securing backing for collaborative projects that have enhanced bilateral ties over the years.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman described the evolution of the bilateral relationship as experiencing fluctuations. However, he noted a strengthening trend, citing examples like the Iron Dome funding and the establishment of an FDA office in Israel, as evidence of deepening cooperation.
Current U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, affirmed this sentiment by highlighting the mutual benefits both countries gain, particularly in technology, medicine, and national security. He pointed out how both nations have worked in unison to counter the Iranian regime’s nuclear ambitions.
Huckabee also stressed the importance of USIEA’s work in providing lawmakers with genuine context about Israel, which transforms misconceptions into understanding. He highlighted Israel’s diverse society, where Arab citizens hold significant roles, challenging stereotypes and fostering deeper dialogue.
Looking forward, Johnston believes in expanding USIEA’s mission. As the U.S.-Israel relationship evolves beyond traditional cooperation, the organization aims to pave the way for new collaborations and educational initiatives.
