USMNT’s 2026 World Cup Run Ends with Belgium Defeat

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team faced a tough 4-1 defeat against Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, marking the end of their journey in the tournament. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino addressed the team’s poor performance after the match.

“From the beginning, we didn’t connect with the game. Even when we scored, and we scored the goal, 1-1, we conceded the next action. It was really tough from the beginning… It wasn’t our day. Not to find excuses, not to find arguments, because we didn’t show what that team normally can show, and that is a reality,”

Pochettino shared these thoughts with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft. He acknowledged that Belgium outperformed the US team in the match.

Belgium’s play was aggressive and highly effective. They held only 43% possession but managed 15 shots with seven on target, resulting in their four goals. In contrast, the US team appeared disorganized and lacking the confidence shown in earlier matches. The team’s only goal came in the first half from a Malik Tillman free kick. Beyond this, they struggled to create scoring opportunities.

Coach Pochettino also spoke about future plans. “In the next weeks, we can start to talk if the federation wants to talk,” he said, indicating potential discussions about his future role.

After the initial equalizer from Tillman, Belgium swiftly regained their lead with another goal. Despite entering the second half with a chance to change the tide, the US team faced more challenges. A critical error occurred when goalkeeper Matt Freese moved far from the goal to intercept a ball. His slip resulted in Hans Vanaken gaining control and scoring a third goal for Belgium at the 57-minute mark.

Adding to the team’s difficulties, they lost Christian Pulisic to injury in the second half. Pulisic attempted to play on but was visibly impaired. He eventually left the field, visibly frustrated, while trying to contribute to his team’s efforts.

Belgium then introduced Romelu Lukaku, who quickly added to the scoreline with a fourth goal only three minutes into stoppage time, cementing Belgium’s 4-1 victory. They now advance to face Spain in the quarterfinals.

The USMNT’s end marks the completion of the 2030 World Cup journey for the host nations. While fans enjoyed the excitement brought by the host countries, US supporters were left desiring a stronger performance in this crucial match.
