LAEM CHABANG, Thailand — The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier made its appearance at an eastern Thai port on Wednesday. Thousands of U.S. sailors and Marines disembarked for the first time after a deployment lasting over 280 days.
The long journey took a toll on the carrier’s appearance, noticeable as it arrived at Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province. The carrier’s paint showed signs of wear, revealing rusted metal on the massive 1,092-foot warship.
The Lincoln stopped for a four-day rest and relaxation visit. It is en route to San Diego after supporting military operations in the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. The extended deployment has raised concerns about supply shortages and its impact on sailors’ mental health.
Navy Confirmation and Arrival Details
The U.S. Navy issued a statement confirming the arrival of the Lincoln strike group. While the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked at nearby Sriracha, the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls arrived at Map Ta Phut in Rayong province.
The Lincoln’s arrival marks its first complete port stop since the deployment began in November. Rear Adm. Robert E. Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, highlighted the importance of this stop as a chance for sailors and Marines to recuperate. He emphasized the trip’s significance in reinforcing the alliance between the United States and Thailand.
Restless Anticipation Among Service Members
On the Lincoln’s deck, service members readied themselves for disembarkation amid loudspeaker announcements. A commanding officer announced his excitement to the crew as they prepared to enter Thailand.
Approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines will explore Pattaya, a popular tourist city nearby. Each member will have three “liberty days” and one duty day on the ship.
Economic Boost for Pattaya
Locals in Pattaya, a city reliant on tourism, eagerly anticipated the Lincoln’s arrival. The ship approached the shore after sunrise, making its way to a major cargo terminal.
Pattaya officials expect the visit to inject around $3 million into the local economy. International tourist arrivals have decreased due to travel disruptions and increased fuel prices associated with the Middle East conflict.
Authorities have increased security measures, enhancing police patrols and road checks. Local businesses aim to attract sailors, showcasing banners to welcome the visitors.
Wichai Yuankham, a factory worker observing the ships’ arrival, expressed his delight. Witnessing the destroyer docking for the first time, he felt proud to share the occasion with surrounding countries.
