Venice’s Strict Dress Code Catches U.S. Tourists Off Guard

While enjoying a vacation in Venice, Italy, a U.S. couple encountered an unexpected situation due to a cultural misunderstanding. Julia Latoff and her boyfriend, Mike, were celebrating his grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary with a trip to Italy and Austria. Their visit to Venice, known as the Floating City, hit a snag during a morning run.

“Both of us are runners, and we make an effort to run in almost every city we travel to,” Julia explained. She shared that their love for running started after college, presenting a way to embrace a solo sport with communal support. While it’s challenging, the running community offers encouragement and motivation.

The seemingly routine run turned stressful when Mike, not wearing a shirt due to the hot July weather, gathered disapproving looks. Back home in NYC, shirtless running is common during summer, and they hadn’t faced issues in Florence earlier that week. However, in Venice, passerby reactions indicated a problem.

As concerned locals expressed their displeasure, Julia and Mike decided to investigate the cause. They learned that Venice enforces strict attire regulations, prohibiting shirtless walking or wearing swimwear in the historic city center. These measures are designed to preserve respect around cultural and religious sites, with fines up to €250 ($290).

Julia and Mike were caught off-guard and quickly found an alley to buy a shirt. Julia shared that they were “embarrassed” by their innocent oversight. Fines in Venice are part of broader rules maintaining the city’s historic and public spaces. Violations, such as sitting on monuments or swimming in canals, incur fines ranging from €25 to €500. Even feeding pigeons can lead to penalties. Riding bicycles in the historic center is forbidden, as is camping in public areas.

Those caught in breach of these regulations risk a DASPO, a legal order banishing individuals from certain areas.

Following the incident, Julia posted a video on Instagram, advising future Venice travelers: “If you are planning to travel to Venice, make sure you pack a running shirt!!!” Both Julia and Mike have taken this as a learning experience. Although Mike continues shirtless runs at home, he remains cautious when traveling.
