A seasoned Democratic attorney is voicing strong opposition to Michigan’s Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. Julian Epstein, former chief legal counsel for House Democrats during the Clinton impeachment hearing, expressed his support for El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, in an op-ed for The New York Post.
In his Friday interview with Fox News Digital, Epstein noted that his op-ed indicated his major shift in allegiance in this highly-contested Senate race.
The Democrats have gone off the deep end. I think the lunatics are in charge of the asylum. I believe there is no place in the party for people who wish to dismantle the Constitution, align with radical Islam, or endorse antisemitism,Epstein stated.
He continued, saying there’s no room for people disinterested in building for future generations but only in redistributing existing resources and undermining the free market, which he views as an effective tool against poverty.
Epstein warned that his party, with its current positions, is heading for disaster. He predicted a mass defection of Democrats who share his sentiment.
I have criticized the Democratic Party as being too far left compared to the median voter. The party has not only gone too far left politically but also lost its moral center,Epstein said.
He praised Rogers, describing him as pragmatic and centrist, the kind of figure who would have fit with Democrats during the Clinton era. Republican candidate Mike Rogers is appealing directly to Michigan Democrats following El-Sayed’s primary victory.
El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic primary over Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens, an establishment favorite who campaigned on progressive platforms while supporting Israel. While leading Democrats back El-Sayed’s campaign, it remains uncertain if Stevens’ supporters will rally behind him in November.
In his op-ed, Epstein claims Rogers can effectively challenge El-Sayed, portraying him negatively. Epstein criticized El-Sayed for echoing Bernie Sanders’ views, which downplay wealth creation in favor of wealth redistribution. He accused El-Sayed of sympathizing with Middle Eastern terrorist groups, advocating cover for attacks on U.S. synagogues, and avoiding alienating Iran’s supporters.
Epstein noted that El-Sayed’s campaign surrogate Hasan Piker has controversial views, including blaming the U.S. for 9/11 and admiring Mao Zedong, a notorious dictator. Piker’s praise of oppressive figures like Fidel Castro and Nicolas Maduro draws further criticism.
Epstein concluded, predicting that Democrats will struggle to escape these issues in the upcoming election.
