Virginia Democrats Campaign Against Iran War Amid Election Stakes

In Henrico County, Virginia, three Democratic contenders united on Monday to campaign. They highlighted the implications of the Iran war, resonating beyond its impact on fuel prices. As oil markets remain unsettled, the conflict adversely affects Republicans in the midterm elections, especially in military-reliant states like Virginia.

Former representative Elaine Luria emphasized, “This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties.” Luria, aiming to unseat Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd District, addressed supporters in eastern Henrico County. Her district includes significant Navy installations in Virginia Beach.

Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor also criticized her opponent, Rep. Rob Wittman, in the 1st District for backing the war. Similarly, former representative Tom Perriello is campaigning against Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, expressing a desire to reclaim his lost seat partly to end the conflict.

Supported by Pete Buttigieg, a notable military veteran and potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, the rally underscored the importance of Democrats gaining control of the House. Buttigieg motivated the crowd of over 200 attendees, “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you.”

With Democrats needing a net gain of four seats for a majority, the push in Virginia signifies a crucial step in the party’s broader strategy.
