In unexpected news, Vita Vea, the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, seeks a trade. Vea, known for his crucial role in the Buccaneers’ 2021 Super Bowl win, wishes to leave Tampa following unsuccessful contract extension negotiations. Currently in the final year of his four-year, $71 million contract signed in 2022, Vea aimed for an extension throughout the offseason.
Vea, originally from California, is rumored to be considering moving to West Coast teams. The San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams are noted potential destinations. Despite these links, Rams head coach Sean McVay dismissed trade prospects on the ‘Up & Adams’ show, praising Vea’s talent but expressing satisfaction with the current squad. McVay stated, ‘He’s a stud. I think that he is a great player that’s always been a problem to game plan against, but I think we feel good about our group right now.’
However, McVay’s statement might not fully reflect the Rams’ intentions. Releasing too much information could weaken their bargaining position. This ambiguity is evident, especially since the Rams are aggressively pursuing a Super Bowl win. They recently made a major trade, acquiring Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, who set a record of 23 sacks in 17 games.
“Our Super Bowl window is wide open,” notes an insider. The Rams have a veteran in Matthew Stafford and anticipate a significant contract extension for All-Pro receiver Puka Nacua.
Vea’s potential addition to the Rams could reinforce their defensive lineup. Currently, their lineup includes Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fiske, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman. Additionally, there’s speculation about Aaron Donald’s return, indicating the Rams’ openness to acquire elite defensive talent.
Vea, now 31, experienced a slight dip in performance last year, achieving 34 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery over 17 games. Nonetheless, he maintains a consistent record, securing four or more sacks for five consecutive seasons. His 70.2 PFF grade was among the top ranks for tackles, and he registered 51 pressures, placing seventh in the NFL.
