Four out of Alabama’s seven congressional districts are conducting primary elections under a reconfigured map that benefits Republicans. This development follows Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s decision to delay the primaries in these districts. The delay came after the Supreme Court’s April ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act, enabling Republicans to remove one of two districts where Black voters previously held the majority.
President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind certain candidates in these newly created districts. Notably, he has endorsed Jerry Carl, who previously served as a congressman, and Rhett Marques, an Alabama state representative. These endorsements are part of the political shifts and dynamics brought about by the redistricting decision.
