Voter Sentiment in 2026 Midterms Focuses on Trump and Economic Issues

The midterm elections of 2026 are shaping up to be centered around President Trump, with both Republicans and Democrats framing the elections with his influence in mind. If this perspective maintains its strength until Election Day, the impact of Trump on these midterms could exceed even his own 2018 mark.

Voter sentiment is shaped by uncertainty on multiple fronts, including the economy, inflation, international conflicts, and AI’s effects. Economic concerns are prominent, impacting perceptions of the party currently in power, similar to the situation two years ago. Interestingly, many voters oppose the Iran conflict and new tariffs, seeing them tied to higher prices.

CBS News House Model

CBS News’ House model converts general Congressional preferences into seat numbers. Democrats currently lead with 228 seats, securing a majority beyond the 218 needed. However, this is not an overwhelming majority. The model predicts the range could climb into the high 230s, while possibly dropping to 215, allowing Republicans a chance to maintain their narrow majority.

The stability of Republican support partially stems from MAGA and 2024 Trump voters who remain with the GOP. They oppose Democratic policies more than support Republican initiatives. A significant portion of Democrat voters come from those experiencing economic difficulties.

Voter Turnout and Enthusiasm

Democrats show greater enthusiasm for voting compared to Republicans. On the Republican side, Trump’s influence encourages turnout among MAGA Republicans. While enthusiasm is high, it’s uncertain if non-MAGA Republicans will participate at similar levels.

Most Republicans find Trump’s endorsement influential, particularly concerning immigration and international trade policies. Democrats, while enjoying an edge, face mixed reactions with endorsements from democratic socialists.

Inflation’s Impact on Party Perceptions

In 2024, Trump gained approval for potential economic and price management. His supporters still distrust Democrats despite economic pressures. The Republican party experiences internal divisions over gas price discussions—MAGA Republicans support increased costs during the Iran conflict; other Republicans don’t.

Voters generally prefer candidates against the expansion of new data centers, with concerns over job impacts from AI uniting both Democrats and Republicans, though Democrats express stronger concerns.

The CBS News/YouGov survey, with a nationally representative sample of 2,460 U.S. adults conducted from September 8-11, 2026, shows a margin of error of ±2.3 points. National demographic representation was ensured, and the seat projections include data simulations accounting for historical polling accuracy.
