First reported by Fox, Memorial Day sparks memories of family cookouts for Wahlburgers executive chef Paul Wahlberg. Growing up in Massachusetts, he recalls classic grilling moments shared with his family.
Wahlberg said, “My dad was that classic dad. He cooked for us. My mom and dad both cooked during the year. But in the summer, my dad manned the grill. And cooking burgers out in the backyard, sitting in the backyard, waiting for those burgers to be done — there was just that feeling.”
These experiences influenced the Wahlburgers chain, which Wahlberg began with his brothers Mark and Donnie in 2011.
Burgers, according to Wahlberg, are “a true summer meal, especially at home.” As summer begins, he suggests some simple rules for grilling:
- Start with high-quality beef.
- Use classic toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions.
- Include the special “Wahl Sauce” from Wahlburgers if available.
- Keep the preparation simple; sometimes less is better.
Wahlberg emphasized not complicating home grilling. He stated, “High-quality beef is the first step to creating the perfect burger.” He also noted the value of simplicity: “The simpler, the better is always good.”
Burgers have a special place in American culture, bringing families together due to their customizable nature. Wahlberg explained, “Food can put you in a very specific time and place in your life.”
He reflected on food’s emotional connections at family events. “Food can put you in a very specific time and place in your life,” he said. “And when someone says, ‘Oh, it tastes just like my mom’s or just like dad’s,’ that’s the highest praise you can receive.”
During Memorial Day, Wahlberg encourages remembering those who enable American freedom and happiness. He cherished the chance to celebrate life with loved ones.
