Warren Quarterback Xavier Vinson Shines in Varsity Season

For Warren senior quarterback Xavier Vinson, reaching his current level was uncertain. Yet, throughout his high school career, his determination has remained steadfast. Vinson stated, “I’ve come a long way and faced a lot of adversity. I always believed I was good enough. I just needed the opportunity to show what I can do.”

Vinson is showcasing his skills as the starting quarterback in his only varsity season, completing 53 out of 100 pass attempts for 702 yards and seven touchdowns. The Blue Devils stand at 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference, having rebounded from three consecutive losses against teams with a combined record of 15-3. They are now contenders in the North Suburban Conference.

“He’s been outstanding, and I find it hard to believe he’s not the best quarterback in the conference right now,” said Warren coach Bryan McNulty.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Vinson features a versatile skill set that complements his size. This has allowed the Blue Devils to adjust their offensive strategy. While they continue to grind out drives on the ground, Vinson’s passing ability offers a new challenge for opponents. This shift comes after the graduation of star running back Aaron Stewart.

“My throwing ability is really helping the offense,” Vinson said. “Previously, with Aaron, throwing wasn’t necessary. Now, the focus is more on the quarterback’s role to pass efficiently, and I’ve been successful in that.”

His impact extends to the team’s preparation, as senior wide receiver Michael Bunch, averaging 19.4 yards per catch with four touchdowns, noted. “We’ve introduced a lot of new routes and concepts in practice,” Bunch said. “A quarterback like X allows us to showcase our capabilities, benefiting the entire offense.”

Despite Warren’s expanding passing game, the running attack remains effective. Junior Jonathan Randolph has rushed for 787 yards, scoring 10 touchdowns. Vinson’s athleticism further enhances the team’s dynamics, evident during a 49-6 conference win over Zion-Benton, where Vinson had a 22-yard touchdown run and a 67-yard rush that set up another score.

“My running ability adds a different element to our offense,” Vinson said. “It keeps defenses guessing. Credit goes to my offensive line for creating holes for big runs, making the dual-threat approach effective.”

Vinson’s journey to the starting role was challenging. He hadn’t started a varsity game before this season, playing sparingly after suffering a torn ACL in his freshman year. As the backup to Reed Dangel last year, Vinson stepped up when Dangel transferred to Carmel for his senior year.

“Once that happened, I knew I had my opportunity,” Vinson said. “It was exciting and relieved stress about securing a spot, allowing me to focus on playing football.”

The season began with a three-game losing streak, impacting Vinson’s confidence. However, a turning point came in a 34-6 win over Mundelein in Week 4.

“There were doubts, and as a quarterback, you take the blame,” he said. “That game became a catalyst, boosting my confidence in leading this team. I know I’m going to make plays, and we enter games expecting to win.”

Looking ahead, Warren’s next two opponents have a combined one win, leading up to a match against conference co-leader Lake Zurich. With each victory, Vinson draws more attention from colleges. He has offers from four Division III teams and scheduled visits for the coming weekends.

“We’ll see how things unfold, but I’m grateful for these opportunities,” Vinson said. “The hard work makes my journey worthwhile.”
