State Emergency Declared Due to Wildfires

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has announced a statewide emergency as wildfires rapidly spread. This situation significantly impacts areas like Spokane, where major blazes necessitate evacuations and prompt a substantial emergency response.

Old Trails Fire in Spokane

The most notable wildfire in the Spokane region is the Old Trails Fire. As reported by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the fire began northwest of Spokane on Saturday morning. It swiftly expanded due to extreme heat, strong winds, and dry conditions. By Saturday evening, it had grown to approximately 4 square miles, endangering around 4,000 structures. Over 200 evacuations were carried out in northwest Spokane and nearby communities, according to Reuters.

Firefighters faced challenges due to wind-driven flames crossing the Spokane River, approaching residential areas. Courtney James, a DNR spokesperson, urged residents to comply with evacuation orders as conditions change rapidly.

Evacuations and Emergency Measures

The DNR issued multiple evacuation orders, including Level 3 warnings, urging immediate evacuation for neighborhoods northwest of Spokane and near Airway Heights due to life-threatening conditions. Thousands of residents were instructed to evacuate as the fire threatened homes and infrastructure.

Mayor Lisa Brown stated that several facilities, such as water reclamation plants and a Veterans Affairs hospital, were evacuated. Governor Ferguson’s emergency declaration allows mobilization of resources and coordinated statewide wildfire operations. The National Guard can be deployed if necessary, and a burn ban is in effect through September 30.

Ferguson highlighted conditions created by drought and high winds, emphasizing the need to prevent loss of life and property damage. He planned to visit the affected area to evaluate the emergency response.

Air Quality Concerns

Even regions outside evacuation zones face risks from wildfire smoke. An Air Quality Alert was issued for Spokane and much of Eastern Washington by the National Weather Service, Washington Department of Ecology, Environmental Protection Agency, and Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency.

The alert covers numerous communities, warning of potential unhealthy pollution levels due to smoke from fires in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activity, avoid strenuous exercise, and enhance indoor air quality.

Statewide Wildfire Effects

The Spokane-area fire is part of a broader wildfire emergency throughout Washington. Reports indicate over 12 major fires are burning across the state, affecting more than 250,000 acres. The largest, Kaiser Canyon Fire, has expanded to about 134,000 acres.

Public Lands Commissioner Dave Upthegrove described the burning of roughly 450,000 acres this season as unprecedented. He emphasized the unusual severity of wildfires across Washington.

Approximately 4,000 firefighters, National Guard personnel, and crews from other states are engaged in battling the fires. Authorities encourage residents to follow official evacuation maps and stay informed about local emergency alerts as conditions evolve.
