Washington Nationals Address Allegations of Religious Discrimination

The Washington Nationals are managing fallout after the O’Keefe Media Group exposed Sean Hudson, the former Director of Community Relations, for allegedly discriminating against Catholic pitcher Trevor Williams. Hudson was recorded claiming bias due to Williams’ opposition to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an anti-Catholic group.

News of Hudson’s termination surfaced on Friday. During the Nationals vs. Padres pregame coverage that same evening, President of Business Operations, Jason Sinnarajah, addressed the issue. He clarified, “First off, I want to say unequivocally we are not anti-Catholic.” The Padres won the game 7-5.

Williams faced alleged targeting by Hudson for condemning the Dodgers’ choice to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, noted for mocking Christian and Catholic practices. Sinnarajah expressed disapproval, stating, “We’re horrified by the comments made on the video. The comments don’t reflect us as an organization, our values, and who we are. We took action right away, and the individual is no longer employed by the team.”

Responding to claims that Williams was sidelined from social media promotions, Sinnarajah apologized to Williams, emphasizing his importance to the team off and on the field.

I also want to take a minute to apologize to Trevor Williams… We feel awful that he’s been dragged into this situation,” Sinnarajah continued, “Trevor is a valued member of the organization. We’ve been proud to support him both on and off the field.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., is advocating for a Department of Justice investigation into the alleged religious discrimination within the Nationals and MLB.

Sinnarajah denied any tracking of players’ online activities or excluding them from social media.

Following Hudson’s dismissal, O’Keefe Media Group stated, “We are glad to see that Nationals fans are getting the accountability many of them have called for. No one should be discriminated against because of their religion, including Trevor Williams. The firing of Sean Hudson is only the first step toward accountability.”

The Nationals’ approach highlighted a clear difference from how the Dodgers managed the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s inclusion, as they never issued an apology and held the ceremony before most fans arrived in 2023.

Williams humorously addressed the incident on Instagram, commenting on Hudson’s claims. His post included, “closer than ever to getting back onto the mound at Nationals Park — and I cannot wait.”
