Washington State’s Spanish Service Glitch: An Accented Experience

In recent months, callers choosing the Spanish language option at the Washington state Department of Licensing (DOL) encountered a peculiar error. Instead of hearing information in Spanish, they were met with an artificial intelligence (AI) voice speaking English with a pronounced Spanish accent. This issue led to notable reactions and has since been resolved by the agency.

Maya Edwards, a resident of Washington, discovered this issue during the summer when her husband attempted to access driver’s license information. Despite being bilingual, he opted for the Spanish language service due to long wait times for English-speaking representatives. The outcome was reminiscent of a scene from the comedy show “Parks and Recreation,” which often lampoons local government operations.

Edwards describes the situation as absurdly humorous but underscores the real accessibility challenges this posed for those needing non-English language support. She illustrated the error by posting a video on TikTok, drawing around 2 million views. This video highlighted the ongoing glitch, which led to significant public interest and concern.

On Friday, the DOL issued a statement clarifying the source of the problem. They attributed the error to internal staff actions and noted that the issue arose from their newer AI-driven technology supporting ten languages. The agency apologized for the inconvenience, acknowledging the unintended complications that emerged from expanding their service options.

Uncertainty remains about whether this glitch affected other languages offered by the system. Attempts by the Associated Press to explore other language services did not reveal similar accent-related issues. As of Thursday, a system message in English acknowledged translation service errors, and a reporter testing the service still encountered the accented English voice.

The error involved using Amazon’s platform for phone services. Interested parties could replicate the voice using Amazon Web Services’ Polly feature, specifically selecting the “Lucia” voice for an accent that mimics Castilian Spanish. Amazon has not yet provided comments on this situation.

This development illustrates the complexities of integrating innovative AI solutions in public service domains and highlights the importance of ensuring accessibility and accuracy in language services.
