The Chicago White Sox are relying heavily on Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery as they aim for playoff success. As they prepare for a crucial three-game series against the Texas Rangers, the Sox hold a narrow 3.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Despite their struggles, the Sox remain in the second position in the AL seeding due to the underperformance of AL West teams.
Both the Rangers and Houston Astros have records of 65-66, positioning the Sox favorably to meet one of them in the AL Division Series. While the Sox must stay alert to every competitor, neither the Rangers, Astros, nor Toronto Blue Jays pose a daunting challenge in a short series. The Sox stand to benefit from not facing an AL East team until possibly reaching the AL Championship Series. Fans are engaged in the journey, as evidenced by a recent upper deck altercation at Rate Field.
General manager Chris Getz believes this Sox team can make an impact in the postseason, despite weaknesses in the rotation and behind the plate. However, for playoff qualification, the team’s top players need to perform at their best.
Monday’s schedule left the Sox with 31 remaining games, meaning patience isn’t feasible. Over the weekend, Murakami and Montgomery were a combined 2-for-29 against the New York Mets, continuing their post-All-Star break slump. Montgomery’s batting average since the break was a meager .194, with a league-worst 39.1% strikeout rate. Murakami hit .208 with a 33.3% strikeout rate during the same period.
The White Sox’s narrow lead persists, despite the underperformance of their key sluggers, which increases reliance on the starting pitching — another pressing concern. Manager Will Venable acknowledged the challenges Murakami faces, stating, “Expectations are high, and you won’t always be in that power mode.” He noted Murakami’s good swing decisions, even if his power hasn’t yielded expected homerun results.
For Montgomery, the issue seems to be poor timing, which affected his performance despite recent solid contact, as shown in a series at Wrigley. Venable believes Montgomery can improve by focusing on contact and swing quality. Despite Montgomery’s 177 strikeouts ranking second-most in the majors, Venable is not considering benching Montgomery for a mental break.
Venable mentioned, “A mental reset is always a solution for guys,” yet he feels Montgomery isn’t at that point. Venable praised Montgomery’s resilience and maintained that he shows no signs of requiring a mental break.
However, a potential solution includes shifting players like Chase Meidroth and Sam Antonacci to new positions while giving Randal Grichuk more opportunities in left field. This strategy might provide Montgomery some time to refine his skills.
If the Sox were out of playoff contention, the scenario might differ. But with a promising season in the making, maximizing each player’s capability is crucial. Getz demonstrated his willingness to be patient earlier in the year by sending pitcher Shane Smith back to Triple-A after a rough start to the season.
With September approaching, it’s uncertain how the team’s management will handle their current situation. The Sox have defied expectations by reaching their current position, and now their focus is firmly on moving forward.
