White Sox Triumph Over Cubs in Extravagant City Series Finale

The decisive game of the City Series brought excitement to Rate Field on Sunday afternoon. The White Sox briefly took the lead in the eighth inning with a three-run home run by Tristan Peters, marking the first in his career. The Cubs swiftly responded in the ninth with a game-tying, three-run homer by Michael Conforto.

The spotlight moment belonged to catcher Edgar Quero, who emerged from a significant hitting slump to become the hero in the 10th inning. Quero launched a two-run home run, clinching a 9-8 victory against Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison before a sold-out crowd of 38,608.

“It feels amazing,” Quero stated. “Once I made contact, I knew it was a deep hit, though not sure it was a homer due to the field’s size. I’m thrilled for myself and the team.”

Before Sunday, Quero was struggling with a .151 batting average and had only one extra-base hit. Sunday’s game was transformative for him, with three hits achieved, culminating in his pivotal home run.

The Chicago White Sox celebrated with Quero at home plate following his game-ending two-run homer. The Sox (24-22) secured their initial series win over the Cubs (29-18) since 2022.

“Understanding the series’ importance makes the victory even sweeter,” said Sox manager Will Venable. “Our fans’ support was crucial, and it’s rewarding to share these exciting moments with them.”

Currently, the Sox are on a three-series winning streak, including victories over Seattle and Kansas City. Conversely, the Cubs have faced defeats in their last three series against Texas, Atlanta, and now the Sox.

“Conceding nine runs is excessive,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell admitted. “We left potential runs unscored, yet it was a good game for baseball enthusiasts, albeit on the losing side this time.”

The game’s early minutes favored the Cubs with interventions like Michael Busch’s home run following Nico Hoerner’s single, instating a 2-0 Cubs advantage. Alex Bregman’s subsequent play extended this lead to 3-0.

Attempting a comeback, the White Sox narrowed the gap in the second inning with an RBI single from Quero. Bregman’s fourth-inning contribution pushed the Cubs ahead 4-1.

A pivotal moment occurred when Miguel Vargas helped tie the game. After a pitch struck Vargas, he advanced through Benintendi’s double hit allowing him to contribute to a tied score of 4.

The deadlock persisted until the eighth, marked by Peters’ impressive three-run homer, offering the Sox a 7-4 lead.

Vocal about his fervor, Peters expressed, “It was the most emotion I’ve shown on a field during a fitting series.”

Cubs’ Conforto swung momentum their way, capitalizing on a walk and an error by Vargas. Conforto’s subsequent blast tied the game yet again, igniting fans’ spirits.

“Faced with momentum players like Domínguez, I sought to capitalize on advantageous counts,” Conforto commented.

Although Cubs’ Swanson nudged forward to 8-7 in the 10th, Quero’s robust hit reversed these fortunes, securing a 407-foot, game-winning home run to left-center field.

“This win means a lot—for me, for our team,” Quero remarked, highlighting the personal achievement equating with his major-league debut.
