A wildfire in Simi Valley, which compelled the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents, reached 22% containment on Wednesday. However, shifting winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation might increase fire activity through Thursday, as reported by the Ventura County Fire Department.
The fire ignited around 11 a.m. on Monday near Sandy Avenue and spread to nearby homes, destroying one. By Wednesday evening, it had burned 2,115 acres and around 17,000 residents were still under evacuation orders.
Approximately 900 firefighters continued battling the Sandy fire, which persisted in steep terrain. Ground crews focused on creating fire lines to reinforce containment, while air tankers dropped retardant to slow the fire’s advance. “We’re here with Cal Fire, L.A. City and L.A. County Fire,” said department spokesperson Andrew Dowd. “We have helicopters, dozers, and engines to aggressively tackle this fire.”
On Tuesday, a firefighter was seen spraying burning brush during the chaos in Runkle Canyon. Along the fire’s southern edge near Albertson Motorway, crews worked to eliminate hot spots. Trevor Johnson of the Ventura County Fire Department mentioned that visible smoke might come from unburned fuel pockets, assuring that resources are on-site to handle the situation.
Efforts also concentrated on the east side of the blaze near Sequioia Avenue, where the fire showed heightened activity. Firefighters aimed to prevent its progression toward the canyon.
A spark from a tractor hitting a rock may have ignited the fire, as per the Simi Valley Police Department.
The incident occurred on Rudolph Drive at 10:17 a.m. on Monday, according to Sgt. Rick Morton. Offshore winds are predicted to gust through the weekend, advised Bryan Lewis from the National Weather Service.
Several road closures were enforced on Wednesday: Bell Canyon Road in both directions from Overland Drive, Katherine Road at the railroad tracks, Clear Springs Road from Santa Susana Pass Road to Katherine Road, Oak Knolls Road at Southern Oaks Avenue, Crinklaw Lane, and Santa Susana Pass Road at Box Canyon Road.
An evacuation warning included areas near Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Chatsworth, West Hills, and Lake Manor.
Other Southern California fires showed varying containment levels. The Verona fire in Riverside County, which scorched 600 acres, was at 30% containment. The Bain fire, also in Riverside, burned 1,456 acres with 34% containment. Santa Rosa Island fire, starting on Friday, reached 17,554 acres and was 44% contained.
Efforts continue across the region as communities cope with these challenges.
