Country music icon Willie Nelson has expressed concern over the growing number of data centers in Texas, citing threats to rural land and resources. He grew up in Abbott, Texas, where he still maintains a home on farmland. Nelson urged the community to resist data centers encroaching on their land. He labeled these facilities as disruptive, causing noise, water depletion, and light pollution. He argued that rural strength comes from preserving farmland and the livelihoods of small family farmers.
Data Center Proliferation in Texas
Texas is rapidly becoming home to numerous data centers, many linked to artificial intelligence. According to the Data Center Map tracker, there are 510 data centers across Texas, with about 200 located in the Dallas area. The Texas Tribune reported at least 248 planned projects statewide, while a poll found 56 percent of Texans opposed local data centers.
Worries About Water
Water usage is a major concern among residents. In Henderson County, residents opposed a Diode Ventures project near Cedar Creek Reservoir, fearing water consumption. The project was expected to use 5 million gallons per day by its fifth year. Diode Ventures later stated that they would not proceed with the project after consultations. Concerns about water consumption arise in other parts of rural Texas as well.
Impact on Farmland and Rural Areas
Nelson and others argue that data centers alter community character. Critics fear losing open spaces, farmland, and forests. Increased rents, traffic congestion, and industrialization of rural areas are other issues.
Noise and Light Concerns
Residents near facilities like Granbury crypto mines and Giga Energy computing sites have complained about persistent noise and vibration. Humming sounds akin to washing machines and continuous disturbances are reported. Companies, such as Giga Energy, have committed to commissioning sound studies and installing sound walls to ease community concerns.
Power and Infrastructure
There is apprehension over who will fund the electricity infrastructure for data centers. Leaders, including Republican Governor Greg Abbott, suggest that data centers should finance their electrical infrastructure and disclose their annual water and electricity usage. Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico advocates for holding data centers accountable for water pollution and infrastructure costs.
Skepticism Towards AI
Texas’s opposition to data centers reflects broader American skepticism towards AI. A survey found rising awareness and concerns about AI’s impact on jobs and trust in responsible usage.
