Wisconsin School Policy Concerns
Wisconsin school policy on transgender locker rooms has caused unease for high school athlete Ella Frei. Frei and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines describe an uncomfortable experience in 2022 when Frei had to share private spaces with a male student. Despite raising the issue with the school board, Frei’s concerns were ignored. She decided to speak publicly against the policy.
Norfolk Police Officer Lawsuit
A former Norfolk, Virginia, police officer, Meghan Grabow, filed a lawsuit against the city and its police chief. Grabow alleges the police department permitted a biological male to use the women’s locker rooms, leading to her discomfort. In an incident in August 2024, Grabow was changing in the women’s locker room when a recruit, described as “a biological male who identifies as a woman,” entered.
Grabow reported feeling watched and uncomfortable, but when she addressed her concerns with superiors, she was advised to “learn to deal with it” and use a different locker room if uncomfortable.
Response from Police Department
Police chief Mark Talbot informed officers that the recruit would use the restroom suitable for her gender. Officers were instructed to refer to the recruit as “she.” Talbot admitted that communication on sharing facilities with a biological male could have been better.
Further Developments
Grabow faced indefinite suspension pending termination in 2025 for a minor traffic violation after voicing her concerns. Other officers left the department due to the backlash against the transgender policy.
Compensation and Legal Claims
Grabow seeks $15 million in compensatory damages. Her claims include intentional emotional distress and violation of religious freedoms, as sharing a changing facility with a biological male contradicted her Catholic beliefs.
Attorney Scott Lloyd represents Grabow, emphasizing the importance of defending female-only spaces. “Officer Grabow has done a brave and admirable thing by stepping forward,” Lloyd stated.
The Norfolk Police Department chose not to comment on the ongoing litigation. However, under 2020 guidelines, employees are advised not to question a transgender person’s identity unless it’s crime-related. The guidelines emphasize respecting individual gender identity and expression.
