WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has addressed recent concerns regarding the inclusion of transgender athletes in the league. In a letter to teams, she acknowledged the ongoing questions surrounding this issue, especially following two former NBA players’ plans to declare for the WNBA Draft.
Engelbert emphasized the complexity of the topic, stating, “This is a complex and nuanced topic, and we will continue to have important conversations with all of you and the Players Association in the weeks and months ahead.” She offered additional discussions and listening sessions for team leaders to share their perspectives.
The discussion was highlighted on the same day Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced their intentions for the 2027 WNBA Draft. This announcement sparked social media reactions, as many criticized the WNBA’s policies regarding athlete eligibility.
The WNBA Players’ Association also released a statement affirming its commitment to diversity and inclusion. It emphasized that the group would not be used politically, stating, “We embrace justice equity, diversity, and inclusion. Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women’s sports while creating transformational change.”
The WNBA has recently become central to national debates about transgender athletes in women’s sports. This was after Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham supported the protection of women’s sports in an interview. Some coaches, including Cheryl Reeve and Natalie Nakase, have also shared their views on the topic, with several supporting the inclusion of transgender athletes.
The discourse around this issue has grown, especially with Kanter and White’s involvement. Commissioner Engelbert is now faced with addressing these significant discussions.
