World Cup Security Concerns Amidst Immigration Tensions

The presence of federal agents at World Cup events across the United States has caused unease among immigrant communities. Federal officials insist that these agents are there for security purposes, not for immigration enforcement.

Markwayne Mullin, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, reassured in a recent interview that there are no plans for large-scale immigration actions at World Cup venues. He stated, “We’re not there to go round up mass individuals.”

Despite these assurances, the backdrop of last year’s immigration crackdowns during the Trump administration has left many people on edge. These concerns were heightened after reports emerged of increased scrutiny at U.S. entry points, affecting fans and participants. Notably, a Somali soccer referee was denied entry into the country.

“Everyone’s angst and fear around the World Cup is valid,” said Murad Awawdeh, leader of the New York Immigration Coalition.

In Los Angeles, a host city affected by past immigration enforcement actions, local officials are seeking reassurance. Last year, President Trump deployed 5,000 troops in response to immigration protests. In light of recent rumors, County Sheriff Robert Luna reached out to local homeland security to confirm that no raids were planned for World Cup games.

Mr. Luna expressed confidence in the information he received, stating, “I have trust they’re giving me the appropriate information.” He warned that if immigration raids occurred, it could trigger additional problems.
