World Cup Showdown: Messi Meets Yamal

Lamine Yamal was just five months old when he first encountered Lionel Messi, the legendary football star. This moment was captured in a December 2007 photograph by Joan Monfort for a 2008 charity calendar organized by the Barcelona Foundation and Diario Sport on behalf of UNICEF. The image shows a 20-year-old Messi with baby Yamal and his mother, Sheila Ebana.

Fast forward to 2026, Messi, now 39, recognized as one of the greatest of all time, and Yamal, a 19-year-old following in Messi’s footsteps at Barcelona, are set to face each other for the first time in a competitive match. On July 19, they will clash in the FIFA Men’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Tom Brady questioned Messi about the iconic photo during Fanatics Fest on July 17. Reflecting on Yamal, Messi commented, “Lamine is a huge player I followed closely because he plays at a club I love. I wish him all the best. He is a global leader at 19 and has a bright future ahead. He has a chance to make history, though we intend to give our all to prevent it.”

Messi added, “The photo is crazy. It’s life; having started with a picture of him as a baby and now facing each other in the World Cup is surreal. He’s undoubtedly among the best in the world, and I wish him luck for Barcelona’s sake.”

This final marks Messi’s third appearance, having previously lost to Germany in 2014 and defeated France in 2022. Meanwhile, Yamal, partaking in his debut World Cup, has propelled Spain to the final. Throughout the tournament, Messi has scored eight goals, becoming the all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 21 goals and leading in assists with 12. Although Yamal has only one goal, his influence on the field remains significant.

Argentina aims to be the first consecutive men’s World Cup winner since Brazil’s victories in 1958 and 1962. Spain looks for their second men’s World Cup title, their previous being in 2010.
