Wynonna Judd Reflects on Struggles with Daughter’s Addiction

Wynonna Judd has spoken candidly about the challenges she faced while attempting to support her daughter, Grace Kelley, through her battle with methamphetamine addiction. Kelley, aged 30, has been entangled in addiction and legal issues for over a decade. She is currently serving a 15-month sentence at Rockingham County Jail in Virginia after pleading guilty to driving with a suspended or revoked license.

In a recent interview, Judd, who is 62 and has released the album The Hard Truth, discussed her realizations about the impact of her efforts to help her daughter. Despite good intentions, she admitted that some actions enabled Kelley’s addiction.

“I really lost myself with Grace and I enabled her, which comes down to basically giving her money for drugs,” Judd admitted. “And here I thought I was buying her a car. And those things really bit me in the butt.”

Judd, experiencing guilt and shame, shared advice for other parents in similar situations: focus on self-improvement. By doing so, she hopes her personal growth can inspire Kelley to seek her own path to recovery.

The deeply personal album The Hard Truth delves into themes of heartbreak, healing, faith, and survival. Judd reflects on her complex relationships, including with her late mother Naomi Judd and Kelley’s struggles. She described the painful realization that her daughter might not find the healing she needs but has come to a place of acceptance.

Wynonna also opened up about her estrangement from Kelley, noting a lack of contact for over a year. She explained that boundaries had to be set after years of attempted interventions.

“Things were tense because I wasn’t giving her money anymore and helping her to go back to rehab again and again,” Judd said. “I just had to say, ‘Sweetheart, you know, you’re 30 years old. It’s time to stop blaming your mom. And I want you to get the help that you need, and you’re gonna have to do it yourself.'”

Judd remains hopeful for a future reconciliation, contingent upon Kelley’s sobriety. She wants Kelley to undergo rehab once more, drawing from her own experiences with treatment for food addiction. Judd believes in recovery and wants to be a positive influence on her daughter.

This complex family dynamic also involves Judd assuming care for Kelley’s daughter, Kaliyah. The decision came amid Kelley’s struggles, and Wynonna acknowledged Kelley’s resentment over this involvement. Nevertheless, the focus remains on providing Kaliyah with a stable upbringing.

Despite the personal challenges, Judd and her husband, Cactus Moser, focus on raising Kaliyah on their Tennessee farm. Life on the farm is centered on simplicity and grounding principles, providing a peaceful environment for growth away from digital distractions. For Judd, life’s pressures offstage are significantly different from her experiences as a performer.
