Xavier Becerra’s Surprise Path to California Governor Race

Xavier Becerra, once considered an unlikely contender in the California governor race, will now advance to the November election. His top-two finish in this week’s primary was confirmed by The Associated Press.

Former Fox News host Steve Hilton, a Republican, and ex-hedge fund manager Democrat Tom Steyer are vying for the second spot, as officials tally millions of ballots. California’s primary system allows the top two finishers, regardless of their party, to move forward to the general election.

Becerra’s performance marks a remarkable comeback in a volatile campaign, potentially setting him up to be California’s first Latino governor of the modern era. Voters recognized his extensive government career, differentiating him from less experienced competitors.

Hilton initially led the returns with early Republican votes. However, many Democrats waited until the final week, preferring to observe candidate developments until Election Day.

The race decision came on Friday when Becerra surpassed Hilton, claiming first place. Hilton’s ability to maintain the lead from Steyer, who gained momentum since Election Day, is uncertain.

Becerra, 68, is poised to be a strong favorite in a potential matchup against Hilton in the general election. Since 2006, no Republican has won statewide office in California. Hilton faces additional obstacles due to his endorsement from President Trump, whose popularity is low in the state.
