Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) faced a tense battle in the main event of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Double or Nothing in New York City. Seeking to regain the AEW world champion title, he risked his hair in the match against Darby Allin. The bout had added tension with wrestling legend Mick Foley’s surprising comments ahead of the event. MJF responded to Foley and the crowd with a controversial kick to the groin.
The event, held on a Memorial Day weekend with gloomy weather, saw MJF and Allin clash immediately. MJF cleverly sidestepped a suicide dive by Allin, causing Allin to crash into the announce table.
MJF executed an apron powerbomb and set up the steel steps for a package piledriver, prompting groans from the audience. As the match continued, both wrestlers were visibly exhausted but continued to fight.
MJF attempted to gain an advantage by carrying Allin up the ramp and removing the barber chair, aiming to cut Allin’s hair. However, Allin resisted, setting MJF on a table and climbing the scaffolding, showcasing his signature daring style. Despite taking a significant risk and bleeding as a result, Allin failed to pin MJF successfully.
In a dramatic turn, MJF thwarted Allin’s Coffin Drop attempt and executed an avalanche Tombstone Piledriver, securing the win and his third AEW world championship title. He joined the ranks of wrestling greats like Lou Thesz, The Rock, and Brock Lesnar with this milestone.
Post-match, the damage continued for Allin. While being stretchered out, Kevin Knight intervened unexpectedly, delivering a UFO Splash on Allin. Knight’s actions raised questions that he’ll have to address during the next “Dynamite” episode.
