The NBA Playoffs have been a rollercoaster. I faced my first significant loss with my picks, predicting the Knicks and Thunder for the Finals, but missing the mark. As the Finals approach, I am reassessing my strategy for betting on the NBA Finals MVP.
The Favorites
Victor Wembanyama stands out as a key player. He might dominate the NBA for the next 12-15 years. If he leads his team to victory, his legacy could be cemented. However, betting on him at -185 odds is not wise since the Spurs are at -205 to win the series. The slight savings don’t justify the risk.
Jalen Brunson presents a better value as a Finals MVP candidate. The Knicks are energized, well-rested, and have a deep roster. His performance will be crucial if New York overcomes San Antonio.
Value Options
Several players could contend for the Finals MVP. They offer varying degrees of risk and reward:
- Karl-Anthony Towns: He will need to be versatile both offensively and defensively against Wembanyama. Stretching the floor and scoring consistently may give him a chance.
- Stephon Castle: At +5000 odds, placing a minor bet may be worthwhile. His defense could be pivotal if the Spurs have a strong series.
- OG Anunoby: With odds at +6000, he is a solid scoring option for the Knicks. If Brunson draws significant defensive attention, Anunoby could shine.
- Josh Hart: Though not the favorite, he brings diverse skills to the table. At +15000, his overall gameplay might make him a sleeper pick worth considering.

How to Bet the NBA Finals MVP
I plan to approach this market cautiously. Wembanyama and Brunson are obvious choices, but I view this opportunity akin to a lottery ticket. The Knicks could surprise everyone, making the less obvious choices valuable. I suggest wagering a half unit on Brunson, splitting another half on Anunoby, Hart, and Castle.
