Understanding the Difference Between Regular and Postseason

Hanover Central sophomore pitcher Jillian DeYoung is keenly aware that the postseason presents a different challenge compared to the regular season. This distinction is recognized by her, and her preparations are tailored accordingly. Her senior catcher, Sienna Stilley, who is headed to Jacksonville State, helps keep her grounded. Stilley remarked, “Every warmup in the postseason, she gets frustrated with herself. I remind her, ‘It’s not the game yet, so relax. You don’t have to force anything.’ Once the game starts, she’s composed and mature.”

DeYoung’s calm command on the field has impressed Stilley, who noted, “She’s commanding the circle like any NCAA Division I player I’ve seen. She’s doing great.”

Dominating Performance in Regional Victory

On Tuesday night, DeYoung showcased her prowess in the Hanover Central Regional. Her efforts led the Northwest Crossroads Conference champion Wildcats to a 5-0 win against Greater South Shore Conference co-champion Griffith in the Class 3A regional. In the game, DeYoung achieved a one-hitter, striking out 10 batters and allowing just two walks, maintaining a perfect game through four innings.

Beyond her pitching achievements, DeYoung also excelled at bat, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hanover Central claimed its second consecutive regional title, marking the third in four seasons. DeYoung’s contribution was instrumental in this success.

Looking Ahead to Semifinals

Hanover Central, boasting a 23-6 record and ranked No. 10 in the state coaches poll, is set to face No. 2 Logansport (27-1) in the Twin Lakes Semistate semifinals. The teams will clash at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Expressing her excitement, DeYoung said, “It’s fun. I’ve been looking forward to this all year because our team knows we have the potential to go back to state. Our confidence in each other turns stress into fun.”

Facing Griffith’s Resistance

During the game against Griffith, DeYoung acknowledged the team’s challenge. She gave some credit to her defense, calling them a “brick wall.” Despite Griffith’s attempt to secure a base runner in their first regional appearance since 2016, DeYoung managed to stifle their efforts.

Coach Sam Antkiewicz recognized Griffith’s determination, saying, “They came to play. DeYoung had to be on her ‘A’ game, and she did. She loves the ball in big games.”

DeYoung’s Remarkable Stats

For this season, DeYoung improved her record to 18-4 with a 1.35 ERA, boasting 224 strikeouts and 40 walks in 130 innings. Her batting stats include a .360 average with three homers and 31 RBIs.

Reflecting on her past year as a freshman, DeYoung went 7-7 with a 1.88 ERA, achieving 165 strikeouts and 44 walks in 111 2/3 innings. She also batted .362 with four homers and 17 RBIs.

Coach Antkiewicz noted her progress, saying, “She’s gotten stronger, kept working, and understands her body better. She’s hitting her stride at the perfect time.”
