Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, plans to perform to tens of thousands in the Netherlands this Saturday amid protests from Jewish groups and Dutch lawmakers due to his history of antisemitism.
While other European countries have rejected Ye’s comeback tour because of global backlash over his antisemitic remarks and a song titled “Heil Hitler,” the Netherlands’ commitment to free speech permits the concerts. Experts note there is no legal basis to cancel the events or prevent Ye’s entry into the country.
The Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security stated, “In this case, there are insufficient grounds to assume a threat to public order or national security” to bar Ye from entering.
Ye is scheduled to perform two concerts at the GelreDome in Arnhem, a stadium with a capacity of about 40,000. The first concert is sold out. Despite pressure from lawmakers and Jewish groups, Arnhem’s mayor, Ahmed Marcouch, approved the event’s permit.
