Maine Primary Election Results: Key Highlights

Graham Platner Wins Democratic Senate Primary in Maine

Graham Platner, a military veteran and first-time candidate, has won the Democratic primary for Senate in Maine, defeating the state’s governor. Platner’s populist message resonated with voters, earning him a chance to face Senator Susan Collins, a vulnerable Republican incumbent, in a significant race this fall.

Platner’s campaign endured several controversies, including scandals about his personal life. Republicans quickly focused on these issues after his victory. During his victory speech, Platner portrayed Ms. Collins as a representative of a political establishment that has let down the people of Maine.

The political establishment keeps looking for that one story, headline, or moment that they can define my campaign by, Platner remarked.

Acknowledging the attempts to discredit him, Platner emphasized that his movement is about struggling Mainers. He criticized Ms. Collins for failing to protect abortion rights and for often aligning with Donald Trump.

Trump’s Candidates Secure Victories

In other primary elections, candidates backed by President Trump succeeded in advancing or leading. In South Carolina, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, supported by Trump, led the field and progressed to a runoff.

In Nevada, Trump’s backing helped two candidates win their primaries, while a third race remains undecided. In North Dakota, Representative Julie Fedorchak successfully defended against a primary challenge with Trump’s endorsement.

Lindsey Graham Avoids Runoff

Senator Lindsey Graham managed to avoid a primary runoff despite facing a strong Republican opponent. Graham has reconciled with former political rival Trump and gained his support, which helped secure a spot on the November ballot.

This primary victory positions Graham for another term in the Senate, especially in a state where Republicans dominate.

Nevada Faces Competitive Governor’s Race

Nevada Democrats have nominated Aaron Ford, the state attorney general, to challenge Gov. Joe Lombardo. Ford has highlighted his working-class background, emphasizing his struggles and reliance on aid programs as a young father.

Ford aims to attract blue-collar voters and address Nevada’s economic concerns. Meanwhile, Lombardo described his administration’s progress but acknowledged areas needing improvement.

The race is expected to hinge on economic conditions, with Ford criticizing Lombardo’s record and highlighting his absence from the state.

Ranked-Choice Voting in Maine

The Republican and Democratic primaries for governor in Maine will be decided by ranked-choice voting. As candidates failed to secure over 50% of votes, ballots will be recounted until a definitive winner emerges.

Bobby Charles leads in the Republican field. On the Democratic side, candidates including Shenna Bellows and Troy Jackson advance into a runoff.

Maine’s political landscape reflects divisions, with Republicans gaining ground in recent years.
