There is a growing concern about over-the-counter medication abuse among teenagers in the United States. Recent records from America’s Poison Centers, which comprise 53 centers nationwide, highlight a significant rise in diphenhydramine abuse among teens aged 13 to 19.
Diphenhydramine Abuse on the Rise
Diphenhydramine, often included in allergy and sleep aids like Benadryl and Zzzquil, has seen increased misuse. From 2024 to 2025, there was a 5.1% rise in overall substance exposure among teenagers. Notably, diphenhydramine cases surged from 10,068 to 13,284, marking a 32% increase. In 2026, 13% of these cases were linked to deliberate abuse, up from 7.3% in 2020.
Health Risks and Warning Signs
The advisory warns that improper or excessive intake of diphenhydramine can impact the brain and heart, leading to severe or even life-threatening effects. Symptoms of poisoning can include drowsiness, rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, seizures, irregular heart rhythm, and loss of consciousness.
America’s Poison Centers recommend securing all medications out of reach of children and teens and strictly following label instructions.
