South Africa Advances to World Cup Knockout Stage with Victory Over South Korea

Historic Win for South Africa

South Africa progressed to the knockout phase of the World Cup for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0 on Wednesday night. Thapelo Maseko’s decisive goal in the 63rd minute, assisted by Tshepang Moremi, secured South Africa’s advancement. The team finished second in Group A, behind Mexico, which won all of its group-stage matches.

Upcoming Knockout Game

The team’s next challenge is against Canada, the runner-up from Group B, scheduled for Sunday in Inglewood, California. Maseko, who had five shots throughout the match, leads the team with eight shots in the tournament. Reflecting on his achievement, Maseko, a forward for Mamelodi Sundowns, mentioned he would advise his younger self to “keep dreaming.”

Group Stage Journey

South Africa began the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico, followed by a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, clinched with a late goal. Entering the final group stage match, victory over South Korea was essential for progression. Previously, South Africa did not advance beyond the group stage in 1998, 2002, and as hosts in 2010.

“The mentality in this group is amazing. Everybody is working for everybody. We are not afraid of other teams.” — Hugo Broos, South Africa Coach

South Korean defender Lee Gi-hyuk and South African forward Evidence Makgopa contended for ball control during a tense match. Head Coach Hugo Broos expressed confidence in his team’s resilience despite initial setbacks. Sphephelo Sithole, who received a red card against Mexico, started the match and contributed to maintaining a clean sheet.

Maseko’s Winning Strike

Despite missing early opportunities, Maseko clinched the victory with a precise left-footed shot from inside the box, sending the ball past a defender into the corner. His teammates celebrated his first World Cup goal, with bench players rushing to join in the celebration as the final whistle sounded. Broos, contemplating his career’s end, described the moment as emotionally overwhelming.

South Korea’s Choices

South Korea’s head coach Hong Myung-bo faced critique for not starting Son Heung-min, opting instead to bring him in as a substitute when opposing defenders tired. Hong acknowledged that, in hindsight, different choices might have been made.

South Korea initially won 2-1 against the Czech Republic, followed by a 1-0 loss to Mexico. Despite the defeat, they remain hopeful of advancing, contingent upon other tournament results.

South Korea holds a history as the first Asian team to reach the knockout rounds in 2002, finishing fourth overall. The Taegeuk Warriors also reached the round of 16 in 2010 and 2022.
