Caitlyn Jenner, a contributor to Fox News, has voiced strong criticism towards the WNBA over its handling of transgender athlete eligibility. Speaking on ‘Fox News @ Night,’ Jenner addressed former NBA player Royce White’s satirical take on the WNBA’s gender policies following his declaration for the draft. She expressed disappointment in what she perceives as the league’s inconsistency and emphasized the importance of protecting Title IX.
Currently, the WNBA has not provided clear guidelines on whether transgender athletes can participate in the league. This issue came to the forefront as former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White attempted to join the WNBA.
During her appearance with host Trace Gallagher, Jenner commented, “They’re highlighting the hypocrisy within the WNBA.” She noted that while WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert acknowledged discussions about transgender issues, no definitive resolution has been reached yet.
“Cathy, XX, you’re in. XY, you’re out. It’s that simple,” Jenner stated.
Jenner supports the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban transgender women from competing in female sports, citing biological advantages that hormone therapy does not fully address. She believes this policy is essential to uphold the intent of Title IX, which she calls one of the most significant pieces of legislation for women’s equality in sports.
The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement specifies that only women can play in the league. However, the agreement, spanning 409 pages, lacks a clear definition of ‘woman’ or ‘women.’ It omits any mention of ‘transgender’ or ‘gender identity,’ while numerous other terms are meticulously defined.
A WNBA spokesperson confirmed that a meeting covered a wide range of topics, including the debates on transgender athletes and the online hostility directed at players. The league denounced any attempts to use these discussions to demean or marginalize individuals.
