Several visitors to Washington, D.C.’s Great American State Fair were hospitalized due to extreme heat. Triple-digit temperatures led organizers to temporarily shut down the event. The intense heat dome affected much of the eastern U.S., with potential for record-breaking temperatures, as forecasters warned of widespread impacts.
Freedom 250, the event organizer, announced a temporary closure until 5 p.m. on Friday due to the sweltering conditions. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures hit triple digits in the capital.
The safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, performers, vendors, and staff is our highest priority.
Over 40 Required Medical Assistance
DC Fire and EMS reported 44 patient contacts before the fair’s closure. Eleven required hospitalization for various illnesses, with seven receiving advanced life support and four receiving basic life support. Over a dozen cases were related to heat illnesses.
NBC News reported that the Department of Health and Human Services and George Washington University Hospital were present at the site. The Great American State Fair and the FIFA Fan Zone planned to reopen at 12 p.m. on Saturday, instead of the original 10 a.m. opening time.
With warm temperatures expected, guests are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen, take breaks in the shade, and look out for family and friends.
Additional measures included complimentary water distribution, water refill stations, cooling tents, and air-conditioned buses available at the event site. All 15 large pavilion structures, located between 4th Street and 14th Street, are air-conditioned for guests seeking relief.
Unexpected Relief from the Heat
One attendee found surprise relief from the heat in a baptism pool inside a religious tent. She shared her experience with Fox 5, explaining how the oppressive heat led her to seek comfort there.
None of these booths have air conditioning. I started seeing stars. I went to a tent with a pool, they asked if I wanted to get in, and I said, ‘yes.’ I’m soaking wet; they filled me with electrolytes, but good lord.
