Controversy Surrounds Sentencing of Illegal Immigrant Trucker in Fatal California Crash

Officials from the Trump administration and conservative groups criticized the sentencing of an illegal immigrant truck driver involved in a fatal accident in California. The driver received a prison sentence of less than five years after a crash that resulted in three deaths.

Sentencing Sparks Backlash

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the sentencing as a ‘slap on the wrist’. He emphasized his department’s commitment to ensuring that illegal immigrant truckers are held accountable. The Department of Homeland Security indicated its readiness to arrest the truck driver upon his release, preventing him from driving again on U.S. roads.

Details of the Crash and Sentencing

Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old from India, was in the U.S. illegally according to federal authorities. He received a sentence of four years and eight months after pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. This plea followed a 2025 crash on Interstate 10 in San Bernardino County, where Singh’s truck collided with slow-moving traffic. The impact resulted in three fatalities and several injuries, with dashcam footage showing Singh failed to brake.

Senator Mike Lee, R-Utah, criticized the sentence as inadequate for a foreign national in the U.S. illegally, who caused such a tragic accident.

Concerns Over Driver Licensing

There is concern about how Singh, illegal in the U.S., obtained a California commercial driver’s license in June 2025. Sean Duffy pointed out that loopholes allowing illegal immigrants to secure commercial licenses pose safety risks. Federal authorities had previously instructed California to address compliance issues with driver’s licenses, seeking to ensure they met federal standards.

Political Reactions

California’s gubernatorial candidates weighed in on related issues of language proficiency tests for truck drivers, with some Democrats opposing mandated English proficiency tests as discriminatory. Former Biden administration’s Health and Human Services Secretary, Xavier Beccera, criticized such measures as potentially racist, highlighting concerns about racial profiling. Republican candidate Sheriff Chad Bianco, however, dismissed such criticisms, focusing on law enforcement and consequences for violations.
