U.S. troops have managed to unload what is reported to be China’s sole batch of aid to Venezuela following the recent earthquakes. Photos show an Air China aircraft landing at Simón Bolívar Airport on July 6, close to two weeks after the earthquakes on June 24. The relief goods, provided by the Chinese government, were unloaded by U.S. soldiers who are leading the disaster response and aid distribution efforts.
US Military Efforts
The U.S. military has taken significant steps in providing aid. Over 1.5 million pounds of aid have been delivered since the earthquakes struck. Secretary Rubio stressed a rapid and effective response from the Trump administration. Key efforts include repairing the Simón Bolívar Airport, damaged by the earthquakes. This repair has allowed large aircraft, such as the C-17, to land and deliver more supplies.
Global Empowerment Mission’s Role
The Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), a Florida-based nonprofit, aims to provide 100,000 boxes of supplies monthly for the next three to six months. To date, GEM has shipped almost a million pounds of aid, consisting of hygiene kits, tents, and generators. Michael Capponi, GEM founder, explained the logistical changes in delivering aid compared to during Nicolás Maduro’s rule.
Financial Support
The State Department reported a commitment of over $386 million in financial assistance to Venezuela through trusted partners. On the other hand, China’s foreign minister announced a $14.72 million financial and material support commitment, as reported by Chinese media. The first shipment from China included tents and generators, which were received by Venezuelan and Chinese officials at the airport.
Casualties and Damage
As of Tuesday, the Venezuelan government reported the earthquakes resulted in 4,734 deaths, 16,740 injuries, and nearly 18,000 people left homeless. The tremors destroyed 190 buildings and damaged over 850 more.
Rescue Operations and Challenges
More than 300 U.S. search and rescue personnel were deployed, although their mission is reportedly complete. Relatives continue to search for missing people amid the ruins, highlighting ongoing challenges in recovery efforts.
