Sendai Nuclear Plant Unaffected
Japan’s nuclear authority informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant remained undamaged following today’s earthquake. The IAEA confirmed it would continue to monitor the situation closely.
Japan’s nuclear plants have been under intense scrutiny since 2011 when a 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami led to meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi.
Emergency Response Deployment
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the dispatch of 300 Japan Self-Defense Forces members to southern Japan. They will assist with disaster relief efforts in the affected regions.
People Trapped in Mall
Local fire officials reported that multiple people are trapped inside a mall following the earthquake. The AEON Mall in Kumamoto Prefecture suffered partial destruction, with an explosion heard on the second floor. State broadcaster NHK showed footage of numerous fire trucks in the parking lot, collapsed ceilings, and obstructed roads.
Infrastructure Damage and Fires
At least 12 buildings collapsed, with people trapped in four locations, mostly in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Aerial footage showed structural damage at commercial facilities, including a mall with a collapsed ceiling. Additionally, seven fires were reported in the area.
Details of the Earthquake
A major earthquake rocked southern Japan on Tuesday, causing train derailments, injuries, and a temporary tsunami warning. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a preliminary 7.1-magnitude quake at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake occurred at 4:27 p.m. local time (3:27 a.m. ET). A tsunami advisory was issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas, lifted later as per NHK.
Tectonic Activity in Japan
Japan is among the most earthquake-prone countries due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” where tectonic plates meet. This region experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity. Nearly 20% of global earthquakes measuring 6.0 or higher occur in Japan. Following the 2011 Fukushima disaster, Japan enhanced its earthquake warning systems and evacuation protocols significantly.
