An unidentified object crashed and exploded in Polish territory after Russia conducted long-range attacks across Ukraine. Polish police reported the crash near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin province. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the incident occurred during Russia’s missile assault on western Ukraine, noting that Polish airspace was breached. The identity of the object as a Russian missile remains unclear.
Poland’s military indicated its air defenses detected at least twelve missiles over western Ukraine close to Polish airspace during the night. Russia’s Ministry of Defense declared it had initiated strikes using “long-range precision weapons from land, air, and sea,” targeting military sites in Ukraine, which included attack drones.
As a NATO member, Poland is subject to Article 5, which treats an attack on one member as an attack on all. Russian drones and missiles have previously entered NATO territories during the Ukraine conflict. This recent incident poses a test to the alliance’s collective defense commitment.
