FIFA President Gianni Infantino has withdrawn his proposal to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial and event operations after facing extensive backlash. On Friday night, Infantino stated that the plan’s divisive nature meant it no longer aligned with FIFA’s objectives. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to unity and progress.
The proposal met strong resistance from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if the plan proceeded. Despite initial insistence on moving forward, FIFA faced internal and external challenges.
The AFC quickly aligned with UEFA and Concacaf, adding pressure on FIFA. Key resignations within Infantino’s team, including adviser Carlos Cordeiro and COO Kevin Lamour, highlighted internal discontent. Lamour criticized the project and called for stronger political leadership in football.
The controversial proposal involved creating a private entity, FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE), to manage major events and sell a 21% minority stake. The intended sale aimed to generate $4.2 billion, funding regional development through the FIFA Fast-Forward Programme.
FIFA’s management expected a significant increase in funding for member associations. However, the plan required approval from a majority of the 211 member associations and the FIFA Council. The opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and AFC, representing a majority, led to the project’s demise.
Even as CONMEBOL refrained from opposing, they stressed financial decisions should not undermine football’s essence. UEFA’s members expressed their intent to boycott as long as the FFE proposal persisted.
Discussion in UEFA and Concacaf meetings questioned Infantino’s leadership. Since taking office after Sepp Blatter in 2016, Infantino was expected to run unchallenged in 2027 elections, but this situation has altered his standing.
Lise Klaveness of the Norwegian Football Federation noted a decline in trust toward Infantino, criticizing relaxed governance principles under his leadership. His future remains uncertain, with the potential for new challengers emerging in the 2027 election.
