El-Sayed Seeks Obama’s Support Amidst Michigan Senate Race

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, expressed interest in having former President Barack Obama campaign alongside him. This comes as the party works to heal rifts from a tense primary. El-Sayed said he had a ‘warm and inspiring’ conversation with Obama but did not share further specifics.

Speaking on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ El-Sayed noted his gratitude for Obama’s advice. He emphasized Michigan’s significant role in upcoming elections and expressed hope that Obama would support efforts in the state, given Obama’s previous success there in the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. An Obama spokesperson confirmed the conversation had taken place.

That same day, Michigan nominees and national Democrats gathered at a rally in Detroit, showcasing party unity. El-Sayed received strong support from attendees after his recent narrow victory over U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. A win in November’s election is vital for the Democrats’ goal of regaining a Senate majority.

The Senate seat is open as Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is not running for reelection. This adds importance to the race in a state that has shifted between parties in recent elections, with Donald Trump securing wins in 2016 and 2024, and Joe Biden winning in 2020.

El-Sayed’s opponent, Republican Mike Rogers, previously lost a close Senate contest to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024. Rogers is attempting to attract Democrats dissatisfied with El-Sayed’s progressive stance by highlighting potential shifts in the party’s direction. In a video message, Rogers extended an invitation to these voters, declaring, ‘You have a home with us.’

During a CNN interview on ‘State of the Union,’ El-Sayed acknowledged differences aired during the primary. Still, he emphasized that shared goals are more significant than the divides. He spoke to the importance of unity, acknowledging varied perspectives among Democrats, yet underscoring a collective responsibility to unite.
