Congressional Democrats are investigating the Trump administration’s actions to deport military service members and their families. This follows an Associated Press report revealing that over 50 active-duty troops’ spouses and parents have been detained by immigration authorities.
A letter sent to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Defense Department, and the Department of Veterans Affairs outlines the Democrats’ concerns. They aim to determine whether the Pentagon and DHS are working together to deport military families. The letter, signed by over 60 lawmakers, highlights that these actions threaten military readiness, undermine service members’ morale, and go against America’s promises to those serving the nation.
The Pentagon has not commented publicly, stating only that it would respond to the lawmakers directly. Meanwhile, DHS stated that military service does not automatically confer legal immigration status or protect individuals from immigration law violations. The Department of Veterans Affairs did not immediately respond to inquiries.
The Democrats provided these agencies with a detailed list of questions. They emphasized that the collaboration between DHS and the military raises ethical and legal issues. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts criticized President Trump for breaking promises to service members by separating military families who were promised immigration protections. She stated these actions harm military readiness and morale.
Senators Warren, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and several House Democrats are spearheading the investigation. The AP’s findings indicate that the Trump administration has reduced protections for military families, diverging from previous bipartisan practices. Service members have had to take leave or delay deployments to care for children after spouses were detained.
Legislators questioned why military recruiters continue to advertise immigration protections. The lawmakers urged the Trump administration to reinstate policies shielding military families from immigration actions, allowing them to adjust their legal status.
Senator Blumenthal, the leading Democrat on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, stated that the report highlights the “unbelievable cruelty” of the Trump immigration agenda. He vowed to demand answers and accountability. However, the Republican heads of the armed services and veterans’ affairs committees did not comment.
Last week, Trump announced the creation of the Military Spouse Commission, led by Jennifer Rauchet, wife of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, to develop policies for improving the lives of military spouses. Trump recognized their essential contributions to military success in a letter published in the Federal Register.
The Defense Department previously informed Democratic lawmakers that no recent policy changes have been made for noncitizen military family members, and no analysis on the impact of deportations on troop readiness and morale had been conducted.
Danitza James, president of Repatriate Our Patriots, expressed concern about the treatment of military families. She emphasized that service members trust the government to protect their families, and this trust is being violated.
