The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason opener on August 15. The team’s star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is making a comeback from an ACL tear he endured during Week 15 of the 2025 season. However, according to head coach Andy Reid, Mahomes is unlikely to play in the preseason.
“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams],” Reid stated. “Percentages are leaning that way. I’m not sure if he’ll play in the second or third game, but the odds are not in favor of that. We’ve got new players in other key positions who need the experience, so the more reps they get, the better.”
This decision opens up opportunities for the team’s backup quarterbacks to gain valuable field experience. Justin Fields, entering his first season with the Chiefs after a recent trade, and Garrett Nussmeier, a rookie drafted in the seventh round, stand to benefit from increased playing time during the preseason.
Following their preseason opener against the Rams, the Chiefs will also face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks before launching into their regular season. The Chiefs will begin their regular-season schedule with a matchup against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
