John Hinckley Jr., known for the 1981 shooting of former President Ronald Reagan, recently expressed well wishes for actress Jodie Foster. Hinckley, who attempted to impress Foster with his actions, stated, “I just wish Jodie Foster well,” during an interview on the “Mark Joseph Show.” While he mentioned not seeing her movies, he acknowledged her current success and wished her a good life.
At 71, Hinckley shared that he was in a delusional state when he believed he would end up spending his life with Foster. The shooting, driven by his obsession, aimed to gain her attention. He described his past belief that Foster would come to join him regardless of his circumstances, whether in jail or a hospital.
“I wanted to have like this union with Jodie Foster,” Hinckley confessed during the interview.
The assassination attempt, which seriously injured Reagan, resulted from Hinckley’s fixation on Foster after seeing her in “Taxi Driver.” Reagan suffered a broken rib, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding. James Brady, the former White House press secretary, was also shot, leading to eventual brain damage and partial paralysis. Brady’s death in 2014 was officially ruled a homicide. Two others were wounded in the incident.
Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a psychiatric hospital. In 2016, he was released and has lived without court restrictions in Virginia since 2022.
Reflecting on his past mindset, Hinckley acknowledged that Foster could have been a target if fate had shifted differently. He admitted, “She definitely could have been a target.” He also apologized for his actions during a 2022 interview, expressing regret to the families affected and to Jodie Foster for being involved in this tragic series of events.
