Hundreds of fans gathered in a coastal Welsh village on Saturday to pay their respects to the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Her coffin was brought back to her home for a final farewell. The Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star, known globally for her 1983 hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ passed away last month in Portugal at the age of 75. Tyler had been in a hospital in Faro, where she owned a residence, for emergency intestinal surgery.
Many fans waited outside her former residence, leaving floral tributes to commemorate her life. People from the United Kingdom and abroad gathered in the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea, to see the hearse carrying her coffin draped in a Welsh flag. Carys Edwards, 18, commented, ‘She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales.’
Bonnie Tyler’s coffin arrived at her home in Mumbles, Swansea, on Saturday. Tyler, born as Gaynor Hopkins, was a coal miner’s daughter from public housing in Skewen, Wales, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Swansea. She grew up with three sisters and two brothers.
Tyler received three Grammy nominations and represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, where she finished 19th. In 2022, she was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, particularly for ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ which topped charts in both the UK and the US. The song has seen renewed interest, amassing over 1 billion streams, notably during eclipses in 2017, 2024, and recently with this week’s solar eclipse.
Besides ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ Tyler was also celebrated for hits like ‘It’s a Heartache’ and ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ from the ‘Footloose’ soundtrack. A private celebration of her life for family and friends will be held at a church in Swansea on Monday. Afterwards, her coffin will journey through her hometown of Skewen.
