Debra Messing is known for her strong Democratic alignment. However, she recently made headlines by endorsing Bruce Blakeman, a Republican, for governor of New York. Messing expressed concern over rising living costs and public safety in New York City.
Messing, age 58, shared her decision through Instagram, clarifying her lifelong Democratic values focusing on voting rights, the LGBTQ+ community, and gun control. She remains dedicated to these issues but feels compelled to act on what she views as declining quality of life in her city.
The actress, famous for her role in ‘Will & Grace,’ stated, “I still stand by every one of those principles… What has changed is how I feel about the city and state I love dearly.”
Messing’s decision follows past endorsements of well-known Democrats such as Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Cynthia Nixon. Previously a critic of President Donald Trump, she now supports the Trump-backed Republican candidate, Bruce Blakeman, citing his stance on economic affordability and public safety.
When the people who live in the city can’t afford to live there, we risk losing part of what has long made New York an extraordinary place of opportunity.
She also addressed the rising violence on streets and subways, which motivated her to reconsider her voting choice. Messing stated her support was purely based on who she believes would improve life conditions for New Yorkers, rather than party loyalty.
Messing revealed her endorsement of Blakeman because of his pro-choice stance and support for gay rights. She acknowledged her disagreement with some of his positions but emphasized the importance of focusing on critical issues such as affordability and safety.
She concluded, “I’m making this decision based on my own conscience and priorities,” reinforcing her belief that party affiliation should not dictate every vote.
