The mother of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli American, shared insights about her son, highlighting that his most remarkable trait was his ordinariness. Interviewed by NBC News, Rachel Goldberg-Polin explained, “There is always a temptation, especially when young people die in tragic ways, to mythologize them or make them into heroes.” For her, Hersh represented an ideal match, possessing both beauty and imperfections.
Hersh’s story gained attention following his abduction from the Nova music festival in southern Israel. His life ended tragically when his body was found alongside five other hostages in a tunnel beneath Gaza’s Rafah in September 2024. He was born in the United States and moved to Israel with his family at the age of seven.
Rachel Goldberg-Polin emphasized, “What stands out about Hersh is that he was completely ordinary.” She added that he embodied both attractiveness and flaws, painting a picture of a relatable and genuine individual.
Rachel Goldberg’s reflections invite consideration of how we remember people who leave us too soon, reminding us to appreciate each person’s unique qualities.
