Transformation of St. John’s Wood Landmark into Luxury Residences

A notable landmark in the United Kingdom, once frequented by Queen Elizabeth II and royal family members, is undergoing a transformation into a luxury residential development. Originally completed in 1825, the Grade II-listed Riding School in the St. John’s Wood barracks served as the historic base for The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, a celebrated ceremonial unit of the British Army.

The King’s Troop, founded by King George VI, has notable historical significance. This unit played a role in the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, transporting her coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. Now, the Riding School is part of St. Johns Wood Square, a new residential area in north London. This location is conveniently near Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill, and affluent areas like Marylebone and Fitzrovia.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery was a cherished part of Queen Elizabeth’s life, according to Major General Matthew Sykes, a former officer in the unit. He shared that The Troop held a special place in the heart of the queen, reflecting a deep personal connection to her father’s legacy and her passion for horses.

The new development also enjoys proximity to the American School in London, potentially drawing American residents to the area. The school was established in the early 1950s and serves students from kindergarten through high school.

The transformation of the Riding School aligns with a growing architectural trend towards adaptive reuse. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA), reusing existing structures can significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with new construction. Architect Gordon Gill highlights the importance of revitalizing existing properties as a focus for future architectural endeavors.

First Look at St. John’s Wood Square Apartments

Newsweek received an exclusive preview of the first showroom apartment at St. John’s Wood Square. The development’s residences boast spacious interiors, with average sizes exceeding 3,260 square feet. The largest units span more than 8,000 square feet, featuring an elegant design with earth tones, luxurious furnishings, and expansive windows.

Sir George Iacobescu, known for his involvement in major urban projects like London’s Canary Wharf, is the visionary behind this development. He emphasizes spreading wider rather than building higher with this project. St. John’s Wood Square features 120 residences on 5.5 acres, incorporating landscaped gardens and offering an array of world-class amenities.

Preserving Historic Heritage

The transformation of the Riding School into a private members’ club, the Riding Club, preserves the rich military history associated with the location. The renovation includes substantial amenities for residents, such as a swimming pool, spa, cinema room, and private dining facilities.

Major General Sykes recalls the Riding School as a central part of military life, used for horse training and events. The new development’s roads, named in honor of the site’s royal heritage, serve as a tribute to this historic legacy.

The restoration work, spearheaded by British heritage specialist WalterLilly and architectural firm WilkinsonEyre, involves meticulous preservation efforts. Thousands of original bricks have been restored alongside newly handmade bricks to match the historic facade. The timber roof trusses and clock tower have also been carefully repaired.

Architect Stafford Critchlow highlighted the architectural beauty of the structure. Despite its agricultural origins, the building features dramatic timber beams and an impressive interior volume.

The first phase of St. John’s Wood Square is slated for completion by spring 2028, with property prices starting from £5.25 million.
