The trailer for Universal Pictures’ romantic comedy “One Night Only” is out, starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro and directed by Will Gluck. In this film, set in an alternative America, a peculiar law permits premarital sex for only one night each year. Think of it like “The Purge,” but for casual encounters instead of crime.
During this sanctioned night, New Yorkers treat it almost as a holiday. There are parties widespread, couples are openly affectionate, and there’s a countdown akin to New Year’s Eve. People have 12 hours to find romance or potentially discover a deeper connection.
The story follows Owen, a pizzeria owner played by Callum Turner. He plans a special night with his girlfriend, portrayed by Maya Hawke, until she reveals she’s interested in someone else, derailing his plans. Meanwhile, aspiring singer Allie, played by Monica Barbaro, is unexpectedly left alone after a friend abandons her for a date. Their chance encounters throughout the night bring them together amidst a series of comedic situations.
The concept may seem outlandish; a dystopian scenario where a law like this wouldn’t survive public dissent. Yet, the screenplay by Travis Braun manages to balance this setting with humor. Braun makes his debut in feature films, shifting from a background in children’s programming.
Director Will Gluck, known for films like “Easy A” and “Friends with Benefits,” captures the humor effectively. The movie includes a subplot of characters desperately searching for condoms, as they are virtually sold out during this one-night celebration.
Callum Turner, known for “Masters of the Air” and “Fantastic Beasts,” is convincing as the charming male lead. Monica Barbaro, recognized from “Top Gun: Maverick,” shines as Allie. Her musical performance in the film is noteworthy, hinting at potential roles in musicals.
“One Night Only” might not reach the iconic status of classics like “When Harry Met Sally” but provides solid entertainment with moments of genuine laughter. Notable appearances from Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton add to the film.
The film could have been shorter, avoiding prolonged product placements, yet it remains Gluck’s best work to date, propelled by the dynamic performances of Turner and Barbaro. While it’s suitable for a date night, perhaps for a younger audience, it could also be reserved for a casual movie night at home.
“One Night Only” has a rating of R due to sexual content, language, and brief nudity, and has a runtime of 1 hour and 42 minutes.
